Jean-Pierre Vial combined a few preexisting themes of his for composing this Canzonetta in 2020. After a brief introduction, the trio develops a melody of pastoral mood that surrounds a second theme much more syncopated. The Spilliaert trio (violinist Jean-Samuel Bez, cellist Guillaume Lagravière and pianist Gauvain de Morant) premiered the Canzonetta in Brussels, in 2021. Jean-Pierre Vial composed this short piece in 2017. The piece is inspired by J. S. Bach's Aria BWV 988, the theme of the well-known “Goldberg Variations”. Despite its much syncopated samba rhythm, which fully contrasts with J. S. Bach's Baroque style, the piece could be considered a supplementary variation to the 30 “Goldberg Variations” where the theme makes the bass line of the variation.
