Violin Concerto in D major

for Violon and Orchestra in D major	pour Piano et Orchestre en ré majeur
Jean-Pierre Vial completed the composition of this concerto in 2025. The concerto consists of four movements, with two lively movements framing a slow movement and a short scherzo. Most often, the orchestra exposes a theme which the solo violin responds to by developing the theme. In the scherzo, it's the opposite with the orchestra responding to the solo violin. Rhythms are often underlined by double basses playing pizzicati, sometimes joined by other strings also playing pizzicati and sometimes by the harp too. The first movement, allegretto, in D major, is based on two main lilting themes. The various developments are often preceded by a ritornello played by string pizzicati. The second movement, andantino, in D minor, is based on two melancholic themes. The mood of melancholy is often reinforced by the solo violin playing the lower strings. The third movement is a short scherzo, in A minor. The solo violin exposes a theme and a few variations then taken up by the orchestra. In the middle of the scherzo, the harp exposes an arpeggiated melody that is gradually completed by the orchestra. The return to the first theme is treated by the solo violin playing glissandi. The last movement, allegro finale, in D major, begins with a lilting theme reminiscent of some folk song. The various developments are often preceded by a ritornello played by various instruments. The developments are interspersed with waltz-like episodes that reinforce the movement's folk mood. The end of the movement is announced by a harp glissando. Le concerto comprend quatre mouvements, avec deux mouvements vifs encadrant un mouvement lent et un court scherzo. Le plus souvent, l'orchestre propose un thème auquel répond le violon solo en développant le thème. Dans le scherzo, c'est l'inverse avec l'orchestre qui répond au violon solo. Les rythmes sont souvent soulignés par les contrebasses en pizzicati, auxquels se joignent parfois les autres cordes aussi en pizzicati et quelquefois la harpe. Le premier mouvement, allegretto, en ré majeur, s'appuie sur deux principaux thèmes chantants. Les divers développements sont souvent précédés d'une ritournelle jouée par les cordes en pizzicati. Le deuxième mouvement, andantino, en ré mineur, s'appuie sur deux thèmes mélancoliques. L'atmosphère mélancolique est souvent renforcée par le violon solo jouant sur les cordes les plus graves. Le troisième mouvement est un bref scherzo, en la mineur. Le violon solo propose un thème et quelques variations que reprend l'orchestre. Au milieu du scherzo, la harpe énonce une mélodie en arpèges que complète progressivement l'orchestre. Le retour au premier thème est traité en glissandi par le violon solo. Le dernier mouvement, allegro finale, en ré majeur, débute par un thème chantant qui évoque quelque chanson populaire. Les divers développements sont souvent précédés d'une ritournelle énoncée par divers instruments. Les développements sont entrecoupés par des épisodes de valse qui renforcent l'atmosphère populaire du mouvement. La fin du mouvement est annoncée par un glissando de la harpe. Jean-Pierre Vial composed this Fughetta in 2015. Since then, he has made several arrangements of this short fugue for various trios. Fughetta is a three-voice fugue, in A major, that contains all the elements of a classical fugue (i.e., subject, counterpoint, developments, stretto, coda, etc.). The current version, for flute, viola & cello, was recorded by Iwona Glinka, Anna Bura & Mariya Bil in Kwidzyn, Poland, in 2024.	Jean-Pierre Vial composa cette Fughetta en 2015. Depuis, il en a réalisé plusieurs arrangements pour divers trios. Fughetta est une courte fugue à trois voix, en la majeur, qui contient tous les éléments d'une fugue classique (c-à-d., sujet, contrepoint, développements, strette, coda, etc.). La présente version, pour flûte, violon alto et violoncelle, a été enregistrée par Iwona Glinka, Anna Bura & Mariya Bil à Kwidzyn (Pologne), en 2024.

Jean-Pierre Vial composed this arrangement, for a large wind ensemble, of Theodor Kirchner's Piano Album Opus 26 n° 5, in 2024. Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903) published his Piano Album in 1877. The 5th piece borrows its rhythms to such Polish dances as mazurkas and polonaises. The score of this arrangement (published by Musicalion) requires a piccolo, two flutes, an oboe, three Bb clarinets, a bass clarinet, a bassoon, four (A, A, T, B) saxophones, three French horns, three trumpets (Bb or C), three trombones, two euphoniums, a tuba and four percussionists playing (D, A, E) timpani, a triangle, cymbals and a snare drum. Jean-Pierre Vial composed this short capriccio for the “B# Chamber Trio” (Ronda Benson Ford, flute, Nicole Doran, bassoon, Emma Anderson, piano), who premiered it in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, in July 2024. The caprice is actually (and quite logically) scored in B# minor but, to help instrumentalists perform it, the instrumental parts are scored in C minor, a key that sounds identically while being far less unusual.
